Data Privacy Day

The Protection of personal data is a Fundamental Right under Article 8 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and is something that we all need to protect. January 28th is Data Privacy Day and is intended to raise awareness and promote data protection best practice.

Why do I need to raise awareness?

Protection of personal data is a Fundamental Right and it is enshrined in the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR 2016/679), the Irish Data Protection Act 2018 and the UK Data Protection Act 2018. All of these regulations require that organisations are able to demonstrate compliance with the accountability principle, which takes many forms including training and awareness.

What is a good place to focus on?

Data Protection legislation is extensive, covering many areas including, but not limited to contract provision requirements, legal basis for processing, data retention and data security. We suggest that you start with the principle of Data Protection by Design and Default.

Data Protection by Design and Default.
